Shaker boxes: August 2017

Just finished making 10 oval Shaker boxes; five of no.4 and five of no.5 (these have yet to have handles fixed). Next stage is to coat the outsides with grape seed oil for a finished veneer.

For over 200 years these boxes were used by Shaker communities in the USA for a variety of purposes:storage, organisational, ceremonial.

The cherry bands are soaked in hot water, bent around a form and secured with copper tacks at the “fingers”. After drying for two days, the top (birds-eye maple) and bottom are cut and secured to the bands with wooden pegs.
