Extract from diary while on the canoe trip; 26th June @ 6.30pm.
"Short paddling today in a tail wind and blue skies; two wonderful sightings. The first at a wolf den with four pups probably only 7 days old with eyes just opened. As we approached we noticed a brown bundle lying in the sand outside the den; one of the pups sunning itself; total of four pups. Much photography, with Alex taking a picture of me holding one of the pups. Then we noticed a fifth older pup cautiousy peeking out of the den before retreating. This is very unusual to have pups of such differing age. A great experience.
Shortly after paddling further down river we stopped, walked up a valley and saw a peregrine falcon and its nest with three brown eggs. Great start to the trip.
Tonight it's windy; the weather may be about to change!"
